Landscape gardening is often compared to painting a picture. No doubt your art teacher told you that a good painting should have one main interest, and the rest are only to make the main idea more beautiful or to create a good background for it. Thus, in landscape gardening, the gardener must have in mind the picture of how he wants the whole thing to look when he has finished his work.

From this research we can develop a small theory of landscape gardening.

Let's go to the grass. A large open lawn technology update is always nice. It's peaceful. It adds a feeling of spaciousness to even a small area. So we can generalize and say that it is good to keep grass areas open. If you cover your lawn with many trees with small flower beds here and there, the overall effect will be variable and subtle. When choosing trees, there are a few things to keep in mind. You should not choose a very strong tree; the tree should be in good shape, with something interesting in the bark, leaves, flowers or fruit. 

Although the poplar grows quickly, it sheds its leaves early and therefore remains bare and ugly until autumn. Keep in mind, there are areas where a single or double row of Lombardy poplar is very effective. 

But I think you will agree with me that the lonely poplar is not. Catalpa is very beautiful in itself. Its leaves are wide, its flowers are attractive, and the seed pods that cling to the tree until winter complete the picture a little. Bright ash berries, shiny sugar maple leaves, tulip tree flowers, white birch bark and copper beech leaves are all beauties to behold.

Location matters when choosing a tree. Assuming the lower part of the yard is relatively low and damp, this is an ideal location for willow. Avoid grouping trees together that look awkward. An old poplar tree does not go well with a beautiful small round tulip tree. The juniper, so neat and clean, will look stupid next to the spreading chestnut. You should remember about proportion and appropriateness.

I would never recommend planting a bunch of evergreens around your house and in your yard. The effect is truly grim. The surrounding houses are covered with such trees and are not only dark dwellings, but also truly unhealthy. The main thing you need inside a house is sunlight and lots of it.

Just as trees are chosen for some good reason, so shrubs must be chosen. In my bouquet I must have some that bloom early, some late, some because of the beauty of the autumn leaves, some because of the color of the skin and others because of the fruit. Some spirea and forsythia bloom early. The red bark of the dogwood retains its color all winter, and the red berries of the barberry remain on the bush even until winter.
