5 Free Activities While Visiting San Francisco
Anyone who knows me knows that I love cheap and free fun for the whole family. It's not that I'm not willing to pay good money for good entertainment, it's just that I believe that the best entertainment is sometimes as free as air.
The same can be said for visiting new cities like San Francisco. I spend a lot of time looking for activities that I and the rest of my family can enjoy for little or no money. This will save money on other things like good food and souvenirs.

I'm also a huge David Letterman fan, and in that spirit, I decided to make my own top five list in honor of Mr. Letterman's Top 10 list. Letterman. My big list of five consists of things to do for free when visiting San Francisco.
1) Golden Gate Bridge.
This is a favorite place among tourists for many reasons. One of these reasons is the fact that it is a landmark unique to San Francisco. This is a unique part of the city that, for many, represents the entire trip. Another reason is that there are so many ways to get there. I recommend walking, and if you're up to it, try one of the guided walking tours - it will provide valuable background information about the bridge, as well as help you avoid getting lost along the way.
2) Golden Gate Park.
This park is larger than New York's Central Park and, in my opinion, no less great. There is so much to do in Golden Gate Park that you could spend most of your vacation here alone.
3) Cable car museum.
This museum will appeal to children of all ages, especially big boys and little boys. This museum certainly offers a lot of education and fun for the whole family. In addition to learning about these neat cable cars that have become a trademark of San Francisco transportation. This is one of the museums I would pay to visit, the fact that it is free is a bonus I can't resist and the main reason it makes this top 10 list.
4) Walking around San Francisco.
These free walking tours aren't just fun; they are also very informative. Learn about the history of the neighborhoods this city is famous for, as well as the talented people who brought this great city back from its ashes and made it even better. San Francisco has a wonderful story to tell, and these guides tell it wonderfully.
5) San Francisco Fire Museum.
For the big kid in all of us who wants to grow up to become a firefighter, this museum is the best option. Not only does it contain great historical references and artifacts, but it's really cool! I can't think of a better compliment for the museum than this. Even your kids will love it and will ask you to come back again and again.
Whether you're a big kid, a little kid, or a kid at heart, these activities are a great, inexpensive way to while away a day or two while on vacation. If you can't bear the thought of whether to save money or not spend it, I'm sure each of these places would be happy to accept donations or at least sell you a thrift store gift (if the place you're visiting has one). However, I hope my suggestions have gotten you thinking and you'll come up with your own great ways to enjoy the sun without wasting a lot of greenery.
